Denali: A Complete Camping and Expedition Guide

Denali, at 6,190 metres the highest peak in North America, is also one of the most demanding camping environments on the planet. The standard South Buttress route from Kahiltna Glacier involves 17 to 21 days of living on glacier ice at elevations from 2,200 to 6,190 metres, in temperatures that can drop to minus 40 degrees C with wind chill, with all food and equipment carried or cached in the snow. Understanding the permit system, the camp structure, the required equipment, and the acclimatisation timeline is prerequisite knowledge before committing to a Denali expedition.

The permit system

All Denali climbing permits are administered by Denali National Park through the Talkeetna Ranger Station. The permit fee is USD 450 per person (as of current NPS rates) and covers the climbing season, which runs from late April through mid-July when the glacier is in optimal condition. Registration opens online through the NPS climbing portal at the start of each year.

The permit covers the standard South Buttress route (West Buttress) and most other glacier approaches. Climbers must register at the Talkeetna Ranger Station before departure for a mandatory safety briefing and equipment check. The NPS requires all climbers to carry human waste disposal equipment (the park provides waste canisters, which are a mandatory item) — all human waste must be deposited into crevasses or carried off the mountain.

The camp structure on the West Buttress

Base Camp, Kahiltna Glacier (2,200 m): the starting point for all West Buttress expeditions. Access is by ski-plane from Talkeetna (approximately 40 minutes). The Denali listed in the geojson corresponds to the general Denali region. The Talkeetna Air Taxi and several other operators fly the glacier approach. Base camp is a flat glacier camp with no facilities; teams establish a snow kitchen and sleeping tents. Crowded during peak season (May through early June) with dozens of expeditions operating simultaneously.

Camp 1 (2,350 m): a short carry from base camp, used to establish a cache before moving up.

Camp 2 (3,350 m): the most commonly used advance base on the Kahiltna Glacier approach. A camp at this elevation is used for acclimatisation before moving up to Camp 3.

Camp 3 (4,335 m): the key acclimatisation camp, situated on the West Buttress just above Windy Corner. Camp 3 is often the most challenging section of the route due to exposure to the Denali plateau winds.

High Camp 4 (5,240 m): the summit camp, established on the ridge below the final headwall. Most teams spend two to three days at high camp acclimatising and waiting for a summit weather window.

Summit: the summit push from high camp to the top is typically 10 to 15 hours round trip in good conditions.

Gear requirements

The gear requirements for Denali are among the most demanding of any non-technical high-altitude route. The NPS equipment checklist specifies minimum standards; the most experienced Denali guides recommend the following as the starting specification:

Tent: a four-season geodesic (MSR Remote 2 or equivalent) capable of withstanding sustained winds above 100 kph and heavy snowfall. The tent must be anchored with deadman anchors in the glacier ice.

Sleeping bag: rated to minus 40 degrees C (a genuine minus 40-degree bag, not a marketing claim). Down insulation with a DWR treatment to resist the high humidity of the glacier environment.

Sleeping pad: two pads stacked — a closed-cell foam (Z Lite Sol) plus an insulated inflatable (NeoAir XTherm). Combined R-value of 9 or above required for the high camps.

Layering system: base layer, mid-layer fleece, softshell jacket, hardshell with hood, down jacket rated to minus 30, and down pants for high camp.

Footwear: double plastic mountaineering boots or modern leather double-insulated boots rated for use with 12-point crampons. No trail running shoes or approach shoes above Camp 1.

The acclimatisation schedule

The standard acclimatisation pattern on the West Buttress: carry loads from Camp 1 to Camp 2 and return to sleep at Camp 1 for two nights; move to Camp 2, carry to Camp 3, return to Camp 2 for two nights; move to Camp 3, carry to Camp 4, return to Camp 3 for two nights; summit attempt from Camp 4. The pattern is compressed from the basic altitude acclimatisation principle (sleep low, climb high) and requires that each transition be preceded by a successful carry to the next level.

Weather windows

Summit weather windows on Denali are typically 24 to 72 hours in duration. Teams on the mountain during May through early June benefit from the longest daylight (near-continuous daylight in late May) which makes summit day logistics more flexible. The summit push typically departs at 1 a.m. or earlier to take advantage of the coldest (most consolidated snow) conditions on the upper face.

Preparing for Denali

Denali is not a beginner climbing objective. The NPS and the guiding community recommend: prior experience on at least one glacier peak above 4,000 metres; crevasse rescue training; comfort with crampons and ice axe arrest; and the physical conditioning to carry a 30-35 kg load (sled plus pack) on the lower glacier. A guided Denali expedition with a permitted guiding service (Alaska Mountaineering School, Mountain Trip, RMI) provides the safety infrastructure and route knowledge for teams without prior Denali experience.
