Best Family-Friendly Campgrounds
Family-friendly campgrounds are differentiated from general campgrounds by the presence of supervised children's activities, safe swimming water within the site boundary, flat pitches with electrical access, well-lit and clean sanitary facilities, and proximity to medical infrastructure. The ACSI rating system's family-specific criteria include playground equipment, children's swimming areas, and family sanitary cabin availability. The ten sites below satisfy these criteria across a range of countries and budgets.
1. Camping Le Vieux Port, Landes, France
One of the largest and most well-equipped family campgrounds in Europe. The site at Messanges in the Landes is positioned between the Atlantic dunes and a freshwater lake, with a water park, multiple pools, a children's animation programme in July and August, and direct beach access. Electric pitches throughout; mobile home hire. The scale means facilities are always available even at full occupancy. ACSI CampingCard accepted off-peak. July bookings typically require a reservation by March.
2. Cong Camping Caravan and Glamping Park, County Mayo, Ireland
In a sheltered woodland setting beside the Cong River, with a children's play area, a paddling area on the river, and a safe enclosed site perimeter. The proximity to Ashford Castle grounds, the dry cave systems, and the Quiet Man heritage sites provides family activity density. The glamping accommodation (wooden pods) removes the tent-pitching logistics for families travelling light. Green Tourism Gold certified.
3. Castle Archdale, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
On the east shore of Lower Lough Erne in the Fermanagh Lakelands, with safe lake swimming, boat hire, a children's play area, and an island ferry service to accessible lake islands. The campground is operated by Forest Service NI and offers a level of nature immersion unusual for a facility campground. The Erne waterway provides kayak routes suitable for older children. Electric and non-electric pitches; good sanitary facilities.
4. Kembu Campsite, Nakuru, Kenya
In the Rift Valley west of Nakuru, with views toward Mount Longonot. The Kembu campsite is one of the better family-oriented options in East Africa, with a secure enclosed site, a swimming pool, children's activities, and family-friendly meals. The proximity to Lake Nakuru National Park (flamingos, rhinos, lions) provides wildlife experience within 30 minutes of the campsite. A useful base for families doing an East Africa circuit without the logistics complexity of remote bush camps.
5. Curraghchase Caravan and Camping, County Limerick, Ireland
In Curraghchase Forest Park, with mature woodland walking trails, a children's play area, and a pet-friendly policy. The forest park was previously a private estate and retains ornamental parkland character alongside the camping infrastructure. Electric pitches, good sanitary facilities, and proximity to Limerick city (25 km) for resupply. Operated by Coillte (Ireland's national forestry service) with reliable facility standards.
6. Camping Sandaya Lac de Serre-Ponçon, Hautes-Alpes, France
On the shore of the largest artificial lake in western Europe, in the French Alps. The Sandaya five-star facilities package includes a heated pool with waterslide, electric pitches throughout, a children's play area, and kayak/paddleboard hire directly from the site. The lake swimming is safe and well-supervised. Mountain scenery and the Écrins glacier views across the water are a backdrop unavailable at most family campgrounds elsewhere.
7. Finca Ixobel, Petén, Guatemala
A working farm and campsite in the jungle of the Petén region, south of Flores and the Tikal ruins. The farm has a swimming pond, horses, trail walks, and a family-friendly dinner service. The combination of jungle wildlife — parrots, monkeys, coatis — and farm animal interaction makes this one of the more genuinely educational family camping experiences in Central America. Hammocks and cabins supplement tent pitches; the campground has been operating for decades with a strong safety record.
8. Laois Caravan and Camping Park, County Laois, Ireland
A small, well-managed private campground in the midlands of Ireland with electric pitches, clean facilities, and a playground. The location near the Slieve Bloom Mountains provides access to trail walking and the Barrow Way towpath cycling route. Less crowded than the coastal campgrounds; reliable facilities and a genuine welcome for families.
9. Surama Ecolodge, Rupununi, Guyana
The Surama community ecolodge on the edge of the Rupununi Savanna in Guyana is one of the most unusual family camping options in the Western Hemisphere — it combines Amazon basin wildlife observation with community guesthouse accommodation. For families with older children interested in wildlife, the giant river otters, giant anteaters, and the river birding in the area are extraordinary. Access is by a four-hour drive from Lethem or by small aircraft.
10. Camping Le Castellas, Hérault, France
Near the Cirque de Navacelles in the Languedoc-Roussillon, a four-star ACSI-rated site with mature oak shade, electric pitches, a pool, individual sanitary cabins, and a family-oriented camping culture. Less animation-heavy than the Atlantic coast resort sites — better suited to families who prefer nature access over entertainment programmes. The Navacelles gorge walk and the Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert heritage village are within 20 km.
What to look for
The practical family campground checklist: electric pitches close to the sanitary block; a children's swimming area with depth markings; a playground within the site perimeter; a camp shop for emergency resupply; proximity to a pharmacy or medical centre. The ACSI guide's family-specific filter (available in the app and the printed guide) is the most reliable European-wide tool for identifying sites that meet these criteria.
